Chairperson’s Report (Steve Hopkins)

  • Steve welcomed back John Mayorga to the meeting
  • Ed Capuano is in the hospital
  • High praise to Gibson Barriga for his rescue of a choking player
  • Officials going upstate for State finals

  • State clinic September 8th, 9th & 10th

o   2 (or perhaps more openings available)

o   Playoff availability has been sent out

§  Turned back playoff game penalty is a full game fee

o   Claim forms should be in as soon as your entire season ends

o   Notify Jim Borek that you had signed up for a scrimmage (even though it may have been rained out), for service credit

o   Current balance is $8,134.57

Sportsmanship Ballots (Mark Furman):

  • Send in ballots as soon as you can

o   Varsity /JV seasons end 5/6, due by 5/18

o   Send in JH ballots even if season extends beyond due date (5/23)

§  Notify Joe Kleinschuster if you did not do a JH schedule for credit

 

OCC (Mark Furman):

o   Turn back appeals have to be to Mark no later than June 1st

 

Interpreter’s Report (Marie Terc):

  • Check bats before your game

o   Bats with this insignia are non-approved bats

§  Do not allow this bat to be used

  • Concentrate on getting closer to the dead ball line
  • In modified games

o   Bat 11 players, any 10 can play the field

  • 2018 softball clinic

o   Begins January 4th

§  Will run every Tuesday and Thursday (8 sessions)

o   Looking for candidates

§  Other sport officials don’t have to pay for clinic (BOCES pays)

  • Neutral zone

o   Where base umpire goes when plate official is on the 3rd base side

  • DP/Flex

o   The flex can move up to the DP position and then back down multiple times

o   If the flex moves to the DP position

§  The original DP has left the game

  • She can re-enter only one more time

§  The DP cannot move down to the flex position

  • 1 year ratings are to be used for playoff assignments

o   2 year ratings will be used for regionals (Nassau/Suffolk)

  • Playoff information is available on our website

o   Bring rule book to field

 

 

Corresponding Secretary’s Report (Stu Cohen)

  • Make sure injury reports are given to Stu within 24 hours of occurrence

Meeting called to order at 7:30 PM by Chairperson Elect, Steve Moffet

 

Chairperson Elect’s Report (Steve Moffet):

  • Steve started with the pledge of allegiance and a moment of silence for our troops
  • John Mayorga will be undergoing surgery in the next few days
  • Uniforms

o   Make sure you are properly equipped  for all games

§  Replace any worn or outdated items

o   A $50 fine can be levied for improper uniform

  • Attendance is by picking up your test booklet
  • Availability

o   Make sure your availability is up to date

§  Try to open morning hours during April break

  • Rainouts

o   Chris stated that she is not opposed to lowering the minimum (from 13 to 10±)

§  However she will defer a decision until after the April vacation

  • Assignors for other softball leagues

o   Give names to Stu Cohen

  • Turn back appeals to Mark Furman

 

Scrimmages/Nominations (Jim Borek):

  • Send in your scrimmage cards to Jim, even though your game was cancelled
  • Nominated

o   Joyce Badger – member at large

o   Rick Norris – Treasurer

o   Additional nominations will be accepted up until the next general membership meeting

  • Exceptional seniors game

o   June 9th (site to be determined)

o   Practice June 7 & 8 (site to be determined)

Treasurer’s Report (Rick Norris):

  • Current balance $6,064.57

o   Still a lot of dues still due

o   Cutoff date is 5/3 without late fee

  • When member goes inactive to active

o   They have to tell Stu and BOCES

o   Our association must tell BOCES as well

o   An active member who goes active to inactive and had paid active dues

§  Will not get reimbursed for State insurance

§  Will be credited difference (minus inactive dues fee) for following year

  • If anyone gets hurt in a game

o   Send liability report to Stu Cohen

  • Send unsporting report to Stu and Mark Furman ASAP

 

Interpreter’s Report (Marie Terc):

  • Marie reviewed the most missed questions from the 2017 test

o   #22 – False

o   #35 – True

o   #56 – False

o   #73 – Dead Ball

  • Bats with 2013 insignia are SLOW PITCH bats and are not allowed
  • Check for cracks in bats
  • No verbal, intentional walks allowed
  • Try to keep batter’s foot in batter’s box while taking signs from coach
  • Umps ARE NOT supervisors

o   If no school supervisor present, then coach becomes supervisor

  • Make sure to ask each coach if teams are legally and properly equipped (to the best of their knowledge)

o   Ask home coach if the field is set up properly (to the best of their knowledge)

  • Tape over player’s ear lobes

o   Take player over to coach

§  Ask player (in front of the coach) if they have an earring under the tape

  • Accept player’s response, and warn coach of penalty if discovered later

o   If earring is seen afterwards

§  Unsporting behavior

  • Eject player
  • Eject coach
  • No V/JV team cannot BAT 10 players

o   Careful with Glen Cove coach

  • Know protest procedures
  • Trees overhanging either foul or fair territory are immediately dead ball, foul ball
  • Defensive conferences

o   Go out, almost immediately, to ask if they are changing pitchers

  • Do not allow defensive coaches to step out onto playable area, to instruct
  • Marie reviewed handout comments issued from the State
  • Modified rules for JH games

o   Rules available on our website

o   15 run “mercy rule”

  • Non-approved and altered bats

o   Batter is out and ejected

         Add 6a to read: Members in good standing for 25 years or more will pay 1/2 a dues fee.            
         Members in good standing for 35 or more years will be exempt from paying dues.

  • It will be voted on at our next meeting (5/3/2017)

Chairperson’s Report (Steve Hopkins):

  • Steve started with the pledge of allegiance and a moment of silence for our troops
  • We need new members to join our association

o   Please make an effort to reach out to anyone (friends, other sport officials)

  • Anyone who hasn’t had their uniform inspection done

Scrimmages/Sportsmanship (Rick Norris):

  • Scrimmages are still available for signup

o   Check website and then contact Rick

  • Make sure you download the proper sportsmanship ballots from our website

  • Anyone who has not received past emails should send Brad their correct email address

 

Corresponding Secretary (Stu Cohen):

  • If anyone gets hurt in a game

o   Send liability report to Stu Cohen

 

Interpreter’s Report (Marie Terc):

  • Marie reviewed the new process for attending defensive conferences

Meeting called to order at 7:30 PM by Chairperson, Steve Hopkins

 

  • Pledge of allegiance
  • Moment of silence

 

BOCES (Grace Chianese)

  • Confirm assignment in a timely manner
  • Keep availability calendar up to date
  • Call to confirm game on day of game

o   If can’t get through to home school, call visitor

o   Make sure to contact school ahead of time for Saturday and vacation day games

o   If inclement weather, call school 2 hours before game start

  • Suggest getting a new BOCES directory as many coaches have changed
  • Know your responsibilities during inclement weather

o   Safety is always first!

  • Use proper forms

o   Download from website

§  Late forms due within 48 hours

  • All turn-backs MUST be CALLED into the office
  • If your partner does not show up, call BOCES the next day

 

Chairperson’s Report (Steve Hopkins)

  • All officials have to have uniform inspection prior to getting a schedule

o   If you didn’t bring your uniform, bring it to next Wednesday’s test

o   Uniform inspection is being used as attendance

  • Congratulations to new varsity officials

o   Up to 3 slots available to any official

o   2015 & 2016 test sheets and answers on our website

  • We will order 10 BOCES directories, $10 ea. by test date
  • Please DO NOT harass the ladies at BOCES

o   Any problems, contact Steve Hopkins or Mark Furman (OCC Rep)

  • We need someone to volunteer to do the JH sportsmanship computations
  • Steve handed out service plaques to members who attained milestone years of service

o   Bob Greenwood – 10 years

o   Peggy Tanella – 15 years

o   Dave Nelson – 15 years

o   Sal Alini – 20 years

  • Members engaged in a brief question and answer period concerning various rules situations with Marie

 

Treasurer (Rick Norris)

  • Current balance $3,196.09

o   Down from $3,776.47 at this time last year

o   There was no clinic this year (only one person enrolled, so it was canceled)

§  Not having a clinic put a severe crimp in our annual finances for this coming year

o   A dozen members either retired or went inactive this year

  • The executive board is looking into means of increasing our income sources and enrollment

o   Any official that can bring in a new candidate will receive a $25 (ea.) credit toward their annual dues, up to a maximum of $100 credit

o   Officials already officiating another Nassau BOCES sport will be reimbursed for the cost of the clinic, provided:

§  They pass the clinic’s test

§  Do a minimum of eight games in the following season

o   Steve floated the idea of either increasing the number of years of service from 25 to 30 years for honorary non-payment of dues

§  Or having those already exempt to voluntarily pay dues, regardless

  • Dues $100 by May 3rd
  • Scrimmages are posted on the website

o   Act as service credit towards the association

o   Trying to keep scrimmages to two officials per game

o   Send scrimmage postcard completions to Jim Borek

 

Dinner Report (Joyce Badger)

  • June 6th, at Piccola Bussola Ristorante, Mineola
    • $25 members, $40 guest
    • Joyce has anyone’s rating cards if they want to see them

 

OCC (Mark Furman)

  • There now is a new, three year contract in place (2016/2017 to 2018/2019)

o   Major aspects

§  Fees for varsity and JV will increase by $5 over span of contract

  • JH games increase $1 each year

§  Late start now is 25 minutes

  • Any unsporting reports must be sent to BOCES as well as copies to Mark Furman, Steve Hopkins and Stu Cohen within 24 hours
